UWA Takes Down CBU 3-0 in GSC Play

Box Score

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Five Tigers recorded .250-plus attack percentages as West Alabama volleyball swept Christian Brothers 3-0 in Gulf South Conference volleyball action at Pruitt Hall on Saturday.

The Tigers improve to 12-7 on the season, moving to 5-5 in league play. The Buccaneers fall to 10-7, dropping to 5-5 in the GSC.

"We came out and had a strong showing today," UWA head coach Alexis Meeks said. "The first set was a point-for-point battle, but our ability to pull away at the end set the pace for the rest of the match."

"We got out to early leads in the second and third sets, and although Christian Brothers fought back, we were able to close out the sets in the end. We stayed in system today, and we were able to use all of our hitters effectively. We kept our foot on the gas and never let up."

West Alabama and Christian Brothers traded control of the first set six times until the Tigers finally pulled away, outscoring the Buccaneers 9-5 en route to a 25-20 set victory.

UWA jumped ahead 3-1 in set two, but was forced to come from behind to win the set. Trailing 13-9, the Tigers rallied behind attacks from Briana Sandifer, Yanesha Johnson and Taylin McCarver to close out the set with a 25-18 win.

The Tigers built two different eight-point leads in the third set and held off the Buccaneers' counter attack to complete the sweep with a 25-19 win.

Sandifer led the Tigers' attack, posting 12 kills on a .286 hitting percentage, followed by Johnson with seven kills. McCarver turned in a .714 hitting percentage, totaling five kills and no errors. Liz Woodard hit .455 on six kills, Callie Murphy hit .400 with two kills and Jamie Lancellot finished with a .250 hitting percentage on two kills.

Abby Ames totaled a match-high 11 digs, leading the UWA defense. Murphy tallied eight digs on the day, followed by Johnson and Alex Fuelling, each with six digs. McCarver sported three blocks in the match, while Woodard and Murphy each posted two blocks.

Emma Lenoir's nine kills topped the Buccaneers' offense. Mary Kathryn Miller finished with eight kills, and Brinsley Cooper landed seven kills. Jessica Reber led the CBU defense with eight digs.

The Tigers will continue at home, taking on No. 21 North Alabama on Tuesday. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
