JACKSON, Tenn. – One hundred and ten minutes were not enough to decide a victor as West Alabama women's soccer drew 2-2 with Union University in a back-and-forth Gulf South Conference battle at the Smith
Memorial Soccer Complex on Sunday.
The Tigers move to 7-4-1 on the season (5-1-1 GSC), while the Bulldogs now sit at 4-4-3 (4-2-2 GSC).
"Both teams played some great football today," UWA head coach
Graeme Orr said. "We did well in the first half, but I was disappointed in the goal we lost. We responded very well which was great because Union started strong."
"To be leading 2-1 late in the match, it's upsetting not to take all the points. However, I believe this will be a strong point late in the season because Union are very good going forward at home. I'm proud of the ladies to go out and get four points this weekend."
Union drew first blood with Summer Senn sinking a shot into the lower right corner of the net on an assist from Kayleigh Patterson. Senn's third goal of the year gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 advantage in the 26
th minute.
The Tigers leveled the match at 1-1 nine minutes into the second half after
TeMia Pride scored an uncontested goal, hitting the middle of an open net for her eighth goal of the season.
Kirsten Reilly earned an assist on the equalizer.
Chelsea Commings put West Alabama in front 2-1 in the 77
th minute, taking a through ball from Reilly into the 18-yard box and beating the keeper to the left corner of the net.
The Bulldogs found an equalizer of their own in the 83
rd minute as Kelsey Wilkes took a shot from inside the box, finding the upper right corner of the goal to tie the match 2-2. Patterson grabbed her second assist of the day on the score.
Issy Foster (7-4-1) made ten saves while facing 28 shots throughout the match. Kirsten Francis (3-3-3) totaled nine saves on a combined 21 shots faced in the draw.
The Tigers will finish up their GSC road trip, taking on No. 6 Lee University on Friday.
