Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

UWA Moves Past Lee 3-1, Advances to GSC Semifinals

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Alabama men's soccer punched its ticket to Clinton, Mississippi, advancing to the Gulf South Conference Tournament Semifinals with a 3-1 first-round victory over Lee University at Tiger Stadium on Tuesday.

The Tigers improve their season mark to 10-6-1 with the win, while the Flames end their season with a 9-7-2 record on the year.

"We have had some excellent performances this season, but the lads played on a completely different level tonight," UWA head coach Matthew Thorne said. "Lee are a fantastic side. They moved the ball very well, and they have some quality players. We knew it would be a battle tonight, and we are absolutely delighted with the result."

"I'm very proud of everyone's performance. From the start we were flying to the ball and fought for every possession. This is the fourth year now that we've made the final four in one of the most competitive conferences in the nation. Now it's on to Mississippi College on Friday, and we're looking forward to it."

West Alabama opened up the night with a score in the fifth minute as Clay Green launched a shot from the left side of the penalty area, bending his strike around the keeper and sneaking it into the right side of the goal to give the Tigers an early 1-0 advantage they would take into the half.

Five minutes into the second half, Green found himself on the assisting side of the score, passing the ball to Liam Ireland from the middle of the 18-yard box. Ireland put one touch on the ball and placed a shot into the upper right corner of the net, improving the Tigers' lead to 2-0.

Green put West Alabama ahead 3-0 just seven minutes later with his second score of the match, finishing Jean-Baptiste Meyniel's corner kick with a header into the back of the net.

Quade Marinell gave the Flames their lone score in the 61st minute, netting his sixth goal of the season off of Tanner Carter's deflected shot from inside the goal box to move the score line to 3-1.

Brad Louis (10-6-1) earned the win, making one save on seven shots faced. Daniel Hrenko (8-4-2) totaled five saves while facing 17 shots in the loss.

West Alabama will advance to take on No. 1 seed and tournament-host Mississippi College in the semifinal match on Friday. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. at Robert P. Longabaugh Field.
