LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Alabama volleyball extended its winning streak to four, avenging an early season loss to Lee by sweeping the Flames 3-0 in Gulf South Conference action at Pruitt Hall on Tuesday.
The Tigers improve to 17-13 on the season, moving to 9-8 in league action. The Flames fall to 12-13, dropping to 8-9 in the GSC.
"Lee played a great game tonight and really challenged us to extend plays and find a way to win," UWA head coach
Alexis Meeks said. "Our hitters worked hard to set up creative shots and knew when to swing aggressively and when to hold back."
"This was a great showing for us moving into Friday's match against Shorter, and we are ready to keep this momentum going."
West Alabama and Lee traded points throughout the first set before the Tigers pulled away, outscoring the Flames 5-1 to close out the set with a 25-21 victory.
With set two tied at 23,
Liz Woodard landed two back-to-back kills to score the final two points for UWA, lifting the Tigers to a 25-23 win in the second set.
Trailing 20-17 in the third set, West Alabama went on an 8-1 run en route to a 25-21 set three win, completing the conference sweep in three straight sets.
Briana Sandifer and
Yanesha Johnson each turned in double-doubles in the win. Sandifer tallied 20 kills on a .327 hitting percentage to lead the Tiger attack, and collected 12 digs for the UWA defense. Johnson's totals were a mirror image of Sandifer's as she picked up 20 digs while finishing with 12 kills on a .423 hitting percentage.
Taylor Donato also earned a .300-plus attack percentage, hitting .308 while totaling five kills on the night.
Abby Ames emerged as the Tigers' second leading defender, grabbing 14 digs.
Catherine Conley led the Flames offensively, totaling nine digs on a .450 hitting percentage. Brooke Wilsman and Blaire Beamer each posted eight kills in the match. Makayla Beebe's 15 digs led the Lee defense, followed by Wilsman with 14. Kristi Farley finished with 13 digs in the loss.
The Tigers will continue at Pruitt Hall, taking on GSC-foe Shorter in UWA's final regular season home match on the 2016 season. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
