Union Moves Past West Alabama in GSC Action

JACKSON, Tenn. - Union's Deja Moorer and Suheily Colon-Rodriguez combined for 33 kills to lead the Bulldogs to a 3-1 Gulf South Conference win over West Alabama at Fred DeLay Gymnasium on Thursday.

Although eliminated from reaching the GSC Tournament, the Bulldogs (10-20, 7-12) took a bite out of the Tigers (17-15, 9-10) chances of making the six-team field, dropping UWA to sixth in the league.

Union jumped out to a 2-0 advantage, besting West Alabama in the first two sets 25-22 and 25-21. The Tigers responded to take the third set 27-25 before falling in set four 25-22. The Bulldogs combined to hit a .213 attack percentage, while the Tigers finished with .180.

Liz Woodard led the UWA attack, posting a season-high 18 kills on a .389 hitting percentage, and tallied a season-high seven blocks at the net. Briana Sandifer collected nine kills, while Taylor Donato, Jaime Lancellot and Yanesha Johnson each finished with seven kills on the night. Abby Ames led the Tigers defensively with 20 digs, followed by Johnson with 19.

Moorer turned in 22 kills while hitting .381 to lead the Bulldogs' offense. Colon-Rodriguz followed, totaling 11 kills in the match. Audrey Cagel led Union on the defensive side of the ball, picking up 22 digs for the Bulldogs. Kristen Goggin rounded out UU's double-digit dig leaders, finishing with 10 digs in the win.
