West Alabama Drops GSC Opener to West Georgia, 56-47

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Georgia held off a fourth quarter rally by West Alabama to open Gulf South Conference women's basketball play with a 56-47 victory over the Tigers Monday at Pruitt Hall Gym.

West Georgia snapped a four-game losing streak to improve to 2-4 overall, 1-0 in the GSC. West Alabama dropped to 3-4 and 0-1. The win was the eighth straight for the Wolves over the Tigers.

Leading 24-19 at the half, West Georgia limited the Tigers to just 1-for-13 from the floor in the third quarter and had built a 22-point lead with 5:55 to play before the UWA bench rallied to cut the lead to eight points on a layup from Kierra Groce with 49.8 seconds to play. The Tigers would not get any closer.

West Alabama outscored the visiting Wolves 20-15 in the final period, but it was too little, too late. The Tigers had managed to score just nine points in the second quarter and eight in the third to dig a hole too deep to climb from.

"Those bench players we had in late in the game at least gave us some effort," UWA head coach Rusty Cram said. "Our starters didn't show up to play. We couldn't make a layup, a free throw or an inside shot. That's on me."

West Alabama shot just 27 percent (17-for-61) from the floor and made just 1-of-11 three point attempts. The Tigers also missed nine free throws and were outrebounded by the Wolves 50-43.

"We played not to lose and not to win," Cram said. "I am so disappointed in our leadership. There just wasn't a drive to win. We need to reevaluate and that's what I am going to do.

De'Ashia Jones had a double-double for West Georgia, scoring 12 points and collecting 11 rebounds. Aysha Harris scored 16 points to lead Wolves' scoring. D'Asia Cain chipped in 13 and had nine rebounds.

Groce was the only Tiger in double figures with 10 points. Catherine Taylor grabbed 10 rebounds for West Alabama, who had a season-low eight turnovers.

West Alabama stays in GSC play traveling to North Alabama (7-0, 1-0) Thursday. West Georgia travels to Alabama Huntsville.
