Mendez Has Three Hits in 6-4 UWA Win Over ECU

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Luigi Mendez had three hits and drove in three runs as No. 9 West Alabama won its fourth straight game, defeating East Central (Okla.) University, 6-4, Friday at Tartt Field.

West Alabama improved to 4-1 with the win. East Central is 0-7. The two teams finish the four-game series with a doubleheader Saturday. First pitch is noon.

After falling behind early, West Alabama clawed back to tie the game at 3-3 in the fifth inning and took the lead in the sixth. East Central led 3-1 after four innings, scoring single runs in each of the first three innings.

"We got behind early but we didn't panic, didn't give up and kept our composure," UWA coach Gary Rundles said. "Luigi had been struggling some at the plate, so it was good to see him have a good day.

"We are still missing opportunities at the plate," Rundles said. "We popped up too many times today with runners in scoring position. That comes from putting too much pressure on yourself to make the big play."

J.T. Stevenson singled and later scored on a wild pitch for the first run of the game in the top of the first inning. Kaleb Matthews reached on one of three UWA errors and scored on a Riley Roberts single in the second. Kris Molter singled and scored on a triple off the bat of David Fernandez in the third.

Jake Bush doubled and scored on a Mendez single in the Tiger half of the second before UWA tied the game with a solo home run by Adam Chamblee and an RBI single by Nick Delgado to score Davis Aiken. The homer was Chamblee's second of the season.

Back-to-back doubles to lead off the sixth gave UWA a 4-3 lead in the sixth that it would not relinquish. Josh Winningham doubled to open the inning and Mendez doubled him home on a sharply hit ball that ricocheted off the third base bag.

Mendez singled in another run the seventh and Dylan Little picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice to stretch the Tiger lead to 6-3. ECU used two West Alabama errors and a single to score a run in the eighth inning.

Jonathan Porter (1-1) picked up the pitching win in relief of UWA starter Josh Jones. Porter worked 1.1 innings, allowing a hit and striking out two. Austin Sanders struck out the side in the ninth to earn his first save. ECU starter Kyle Britt (0-1) took the loss.

"Pitching sets the tone in baseball and Josh struggled some early with some bad tow-strike pitches that turned into base hits," Rundles said. "He settled down though and Porter, Brandon Pennington and Austin Sanders finished it up."

Delgado and Chamblee each had two hits in a 10-hit outing for West Alabama. Bush had a hit and walked three times. Roberts and Stevenson had two hits apiece in a nine-hit ECU attack.
