Tigers Keep GSC Tourney Hopes Alive with 63-55 Win over Valdosta State

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – In a do-or-die situation in its last three games of the regular season, the University of West Alabama women's basketball team kept its Gulf South Tournament hopes alive with a 63-55 victory over Valdosta State Thursday Pruitt Hall.

Having to win each of its final three games to earn the final conference tournament berth, West Alabama improved to 9-15 overall and 6-13 in conference play. Valdosta State is 11-14 and 7-13.

"Nobody would believe this is the same basketball team that they saw in November," UWA coach Rusty Cram said. "We are getting seasoned, getting better every game, and an opportunity to play in the conference tournament would continue that seasoning for next season."

West Alabama, who has won two of its last three games and split its last six since Jan. 30, shot 50 percent from the floor (22-44) and 88 percent (15-17) from the free throw line while limiting VSU to just 39 percent (22-56) from the field. The Lady Blazers made just 6-of-15 from the free throw line.

West Alabama jumped on the Lady Blazers early, leading 11-1 before Valdosta State called timeout with 4:44 left in the first quarter. UWA led by as many as 16 points in the third quarter. The Lady Blazers only lead of the game was 1-0. Valdosta State cut the Tiger it to 57-52 with 41 seconds to play but could get no closer.

"We are working hard to turn a lemon into lemonade," Cram said. "Going into tonight we had three opportunities to get to the tournament. It's pretty simple. We have to win or we are done.

"Catherine Taylor and Ariel Wilson are doing absolutely everything we are asking of them," Cram said. "Tonight we won with our defense more than our offense."

Taylor scored 22 points and Wilson 17 to lead West Alabama. Moejha Calmes and Sydney King had five rebounds each to lead the Tigers.

Aalivah Cheatham sored 19 points and Madi Mitchell chipped in 17 more to lead Valdosta State. Maddy Corazza led all rebounders with eight. Mitchell had seven.

West Alabama is host to West Florida on Saturday, while Valdosta State travels to West Georgia.
