Cockrum Has Grand Slam in 12-7 West Alabama Win at MC

CLINTON, Miss.Jack Cockrum belted a grand slam home run and drove in five runs as West Alabama defeated Mississippi College, 12-7, in Gulf South College baseball Sunday at Frierson Field.

With the sweep of the series from the Choctaws, West Alabama has won four straight games and improved to 11-4 overall and 4-2 in GSC play. Mississippi College dropped to 6-7 and 1-5.

"I was pleased with the way we came out ready to play today," UWA head coach Gary Rundles said. "Anytime you can go on the road and get a sweep in this conference is obviously good. It isn't very easy to do."

The Tigers made it look easy early. Leading 1-0, West Alabama sent 12 batters to the plate while scoring seven runs with two outs in the fourth inning. Cockrum's blast, his fourth of the season, was the big blow. Josh Winningham contributed a two-run double in the inning as well.

Mississippi College scored three times in the bottom of the fourth. A two-run homer by Chase Whitten and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Toler Robinson accounted for the runs. An RBI single by Austin Warkentin in the fifth inning cut the Tigers' lead to 8-4.

Cockrum singled in a run in the seventh, followed by a two-run double by Luigi Mendez and an RBI single off the bat of Dylan Little to plate three more UWA runs in the eighth.

Mississippi College scratched out two runs in the eighth and one in the ninth courtesy of a solo homer by Warkentin, who had four hits in the game.

Evan Miller (1-1) picked up the pitching win in relief of Tiger starter Anthony Rosati. Miller worked four innings, allowing three runs on seven hit while striking out four. Choctaw starter Blaine Crim (2-3) took the loss after allowing eight runs (four earned) on seven hits through 3.2 innings.
