UWA Wins 12th Straight, Sweeps CBU Series with 11-2 Win on Monday

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Jack Cockrum, Luigi Mendez, Dylan Little and Adam Chamblee had three hits each as West Alabama cruised to an 11-2 Gulf South Conference College baseball victory over Christian Brothers Monday at Tartt Field.

The win was the 12th in a row for No. 7 West Alabama (19-4, 10-2). Christian Brothers (5-17, 0-12) dropped its sixth straight game. West Alabama is no stranger to winning streaks, running off a 20-gamer on the way to the 2015 GSC championship.

"This baseball team has gone through a lot over the past week and has continued to battle," UWA head coach Gary Rundles said. "To win three conference games while working through that is really good. I think we will be better in the long run after meeting adversity and learning from it."

The Tigers collected 16 hits and scored in seven of nine innings, but left 14 runners on base. Cockrum, Jake Bush and Mitch Holgate doubled for West Alabama. Cockrum and Josh Winningham tripled. Winningham now has a hit in his last five at bats, while Bush has reached base in 23 straight games. Mendez has reached base safely in 16 straight games.

Evan Anderson (5-1) scattered four hits and one earned run over six innings to pick up the pitching win. David Cromer worked two scoreless innings and Austin Sanders a scoreless ninth for the Tigers. CBU starter Patrick Gurley 1-3), the first of six Buccaneer pitchers, was tagged with the loss.

"Considering he battled the flu all week since his last start, I thought Evan pitched with a lot of guts," Rundles said. "He didn't have his best stuff, but to fight off the flu and give us six solid innings is a huge plus.

"Cromer has worked himself back into the mix with three good outings in a row," Rundles said. "Sanders threw better today. It wasn't a save situation, but he needed the work and he didn't just blow off the assignment and go through the motions."

Cockrum, Chamblee and Holgate each drove in two runs and Cockrum was a home run away from hitting for the cycle.

No Christian Brothers player had more than one hit as UWA limited the Bucs to just five hits. West Alabama's pitching staff allowed just 14 CBU hits in the three games.

UWA plays for the fourth time in three days when Miles College visits Tartt Field Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
