Big Inning Propels No. 4 UWA to Win over Union

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Alabama used four doubles to score seven runs in the seventh inning on the way to a 10-2 Gulf South Conference college baseball victory over Union Friday at Tartt Field.

Ranked No. 4 in the nation, West Alabama improved to 24-5 overall and 13-3 in the GSC. Union dropped to 14-11 and 8-7. The win was also the 899th in the 29-year career of Tiger head coach Gray Rundles.

Trailing 2-1, West Alabama sent 11 batters to the plate in the seventh to score the seven runs. Luigi Mendez had two doubles in the inning, one to start the inning and one to drive in a run with two outs. Jack Cockrum doubled in a run and Dylan Little doubled in three in the frame. Nick Delgado had a sacrifice fly to plate another run.

"We had some huge at bats in the seventh and Dylan Little got a really big two-out double," UWA coach Gary Rundles said. "We were slow to start tonight, but we kept picking away and putting pressure on until we finally broke through."

Mitch Holgate hit his ninth home run, a two-run blast to left, in the eighth inning for the final runs of the night.

Union got a solo homer from Zach Wylie, his fourth, in the first inning and the Bulldogs scored another run without the aid of a hit in the fourth.

West Alabama starter Evan Miller (4-1) worked eight innings to pick up the pitching win. Miller scattered four hits and allowed just one earned run while striking out seven and walking five. David Cromer pitched a scoreless ninth for the Tigers, striking out one. Union starter Marty Coursey (2-3) was tagged with the loss after allowing eight runs on 10 hits.

"That was a gutsy performance by Evan Miller," Rundles said. "He pitched really well after the third and seemed to get stronger and more confident as the game wore on."

Josh Winningham had three hits to pace a 13-hit UWA attack. Cockrum had two hits for the Tigers. No Union player had more than one hit as Miller and Cromer combined to allow just five Bulldogs hits.

The Tigers will be looking to hand Rundles career victory number 900 when the two teams meet in a doubleheader beginning at noon Saturday at Tartt Field.
