Cockrum Gets Seven Hits as Tigers, Wolves Split Doubleheader

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Alabama catcher Jack Cockrum collected seven hits and drove in five runs  as UWA and West Georgia split a Gulf South Conference doubleheader Saturday at Tartt Field. UWA won the first game, 15-3, and West Georgia the nightcap, 12-5.
 
The Tigers and the Wolves, currently battling for the third seed in the upcoming GSC Tournament, play the rubber game of the series Sunday at 1 p.m.
 
West Alabama is 32-12 overall, 20-9 in league play, while UWG is 33-11 and 19-10. West Alabama's win in game one snapped a 15-game winning streak for West Georgia, while the Wolves game two win snapped a six-game winning streak for UWA.
 
Cockrum went 3-for-4 with three runs batted in in the first game and followed that with a 4-for-4 second game with two more RBI. Among his seven hits were a double and his eighth home run of the season.
 
West Alabama used big innings in the opener, scoring four times in the second inning, five in the third and five more in the fifth. The game was called after six-and-a-half innings due to the GSC mercy rule.
 
West Georgia returned the favor in the second game, using eight hits to score seven runs in the third inning. The Wolves had two homers and two doubles in the inning. The homers came from Dalton Payne and Tyler Hutch. Artemis Kadkhodaian homered in a three-run fifth inning for the Wolves in game two.
 
Jorge Cruz (2-1) scattered four hits over six scoreless innings for the pitching win in game one. The Tiger right-hander struck out six and walked two. Wolves starter Brandon Goldsmith (8-1) took the loss after allowing seven runs on four hits in two-plus innings.
 
West Georgia starter Matthew Norton (6-1) went seven innings for the win in the second game, allowing seven hits and five run while walking three and striking out four. West Alabama starter Evan Miller (5-4) absorbed the loss after allowing seven runs on eight hits and striking out two.
 
Mitch Holgate had three hits for UWA in the two games. Caleb Lopes went 4-for-4 in the nightcap for the Wolves, while Kadkhodaian and Rogers had three hits each for West Georgia.
 
Ten West Alabama seniors will be honored prior to Sunday's game. Those include pitchers Jorge Cruz, Josh Jones, Brandon Pennington, Severino Signa and David Cromer, as well as second baseman Luigi Mendez, third baseman Holgate, left fielder Adam Chamblee, catcher Cockrum and right fielder Jake Bush.
