Tigers Beat Top-Seeded West Florida, 4-3, to Stay Alive in GSC Tournament

PENSACOLA, Ala. – Jake Bush singled through a drawn in infield to score Mitch Holgate in the bottom of the eighth inning, then Brandon Pennington retired West Florida in order in the ninth as West Alabama defeated the top-seeded Argonauts, 4-3, in Gulf South Conference Tournament play Sunday at Jim Spooner Field.

The win kept West Alabama (36-14) alive in the tournament to face #5 seed Alabama Huntsville in an elimination game Monday at 3 p.m. The Chargers eliminated Lee with a 10-9 win on Sunday. West Florida (34-14) will play the loser of Sunday's late game between West Georgia and Delta State at 11 a.m. Monday.

"We had our backs to the wall against the top team in our league and our guys answered the bell," UWA head coach Gary Rundles said. "We had big hits from several folks. Obviously Jake's hit was huge and Adam Chamblee's hit and base running was clutch in the seventh. Penny was Penny, getting big outs when we needed them."

West Florida scored a single run in the first on a pair of hits, but UWA answered with a run on two hits and a pair of Argo errors in the second inning. UWF squeezed out a run on four hits in the fifth inning and led until the bottom of the seventh.

Luigi Mendez doubled to lead off the UWA seventh and two outs later Chamblee doubled Mendez in with a shot to the left centerfield gap. Chamblee then scored from second base on an infield hit by Davis Aiken to put West Alabama on top 3-2.

The UWA lead was short lived. Nick Kerkmann hit his second home run of the season to open the eighth inning and tie the score at 3-3. Bush's game-winner came in the bottom of the eighth.

Holgate had a pair of doubles and Mendez added a single to his double to lead a 10-hit West Alabama attack.

Pennington (2-0) got the final seven outs in relief of Tiger starter Josh Jones to earn the win. He allowed three hits and struck out one. West Florida reliever Jarrod Petree (6-2) took the loss in relief of starter Walker O'Connor.

Alex Greene and Justin Ambrosino each had three hits in a 13-hit West Florida attack. Kyle Hamner and Jimmy Redovian had two hits each.

West Alabama fans can catch all the action live on the Twin States leader, ESPN 104.9, Monday afternoon. The broadcast is also available on the espn1049 App and at www.espn1049.com.
