FLORENCE, Ala. - West Alabama volleyball fell 3-0 to American Volleyball Coaches Association 23rd-ranked North Alabama to open Gulf South Conference play at Flowers Hall on Tuesday.
The Tigers fall to 6-3 overall, while dropping to 0-1 in GSC action. The Lions stay perfect at 9-0 on the season, improving to 1-0 in league play.
"That was the toughest loss we've had all year," UWA head coach
Alexis Meeks said. "We worked really hard to fight the whole match, but unfortunate circumstances didn't allow us to pull it out."
"We still have a lot to learn about ourselves, but we are constantly taking steps in the right direction."
After taking the first two sets 25-14 and 25-15, UNA had to rally to win the third set. Trailing 23-20, the Lions scored the final five points to earn the 25-23 victory.
North Alabama combined to hit a .330 attack percentage, while West Alabama finished with .120.
Briana Sandifer led the Tigers on offense, recording 15 kills on the night.
Abby Ames totaled 11 digs to lead the UWA defense.
Natasha Fomina posted 11 kills and a .588 attack percentage, while Lexie Bradley notched 10 kills for the Lions' attack. Ashton Kapovich picked up 13 digs and Jayden Davila-McClary tallied 10 digs.
The Tigers will open their home schedule with a GSC match against Valdosta State on Friday. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
