West Alabama Runs Past Mississippi College, 38-13

CLINTON, Miss. – Lakendric Thomas ran for 145 yards and Harry Satterwhite threw three touchdown passes to lead West Alabama to a 38-13 Gulf South Conference football victory over Mississippi College Saturday at Robinson Hale Stadium.

The win improved West Alabama to 1-2 overall, 1-0 in GSC play. Mississippi College dropped to 1-2 and 0-2.

"We came in wanting to run the football and we were able to accomplish that," UWA head coach Brett Gilliland said. "We gave up a couple of big plays, but then the defense did a good job of holding them to kicks.

"It feels good to come on the road and win a conference game," Gilliland said. "We have a really big week coming up with North Alabama coming to town for our first home game of the year."

The Tigers rushed for 285 of their 375 total yards, with Thomas getting his 145 on 23 carries. Lee ran 10 times for 81 yards and Davonta Johnson-Parker chipped in 65 yards on nine trips.

Satterwhite, making his first start of the year at quarterback for an injured Austin Grammer, drove the Tigers 69 yards in 14 plays to open the scoring. Satterwhite capped the drive with a 3-yard touchdown pass to Tray Fletcher and UWA led 7-0 after one possession.

Mississippi College answered on its first possession, with Sharone Wright finding Colt Freeman on a 13-yard touchdown pass to make it 7-7 with 6:25 left in the first period. The Choctaws drive was eight plays and 82 yards.

Matt Brasher and Reed James traded field goals in the second quarter, Brasher nailing a 21-yarder with 9:36 left before the half and James a 45-yarder with 5:39 left.

Jordan Jones blocked a Mississippi College punt and recovered it at the Choctaws 28-yard line with less than three minutes to go in the half. Lakendric Thomas capped the drive with 28 seconds left in the second period on an 8-yard run to give UWA a 17-10 lead at the half.

Jones had a chance to scoop and score, but over-ran the football and had to just be sure of possession.

"It was the gloves, they were just too wet," Jones said with a smile following the game. "Seriously, I should have scored, but I didn't bend my knees when I went to pick up the football and couldn't get a handle."

Thomas put the Tigers ahead 17-10 at the half with an 8-yard scoring run with 38 seconds left in the second quarter. Thomas finished the half with 109 yards rushing on 17 carries.

"The O-line did a tremendous job so give all the credit to them," Thomas said. "We usually rotate a little more in the first half, but we were flowing good and just stayed with it."

Brasher nailed a 27-yard field goal at the 11:54 mark in the third period to cut the Tiger lead to 17-13, but the Tigers answered just over two minutes later when Satterwhite and Fletcher hooked up for another 3-yard scoring pass to give UWA a 24-13 lead.

Satterwhite completed his third scoring pass, finding a leaping Donta Armstrong from 20 yard out with 7:19 to play. Rashaad Lee capped off West Alabama scoring with a 32-yard run with just 56 seconds left.

Satterwhite completed 13-of-19 passes for 80 yards. Armstrong, the leading receiver in the GSC coming into the game, had four receptions for 34 yards.

"I felt good tonight. We had a good plan and got the run going, which opened it up when we wanted to throw," Satterwhite said. "The guys up front got great push, so we just stuck to the plan. We thought we could exploit them on the run and we did."

Wright completed 24-of-37 passing attempts for 285 yards, but was intercepted by Ladaris Johnson and Dee Virgin, the first two picks by the Tigers this season. Virgin also averaged 30 yards on two kickoff returns.

"I was blessed tonight. The defensive line got good pressure and they wanted to throw the bubble route," Virgin said. "I just made the play."

Mississippi College's Marcel Newson caught eight passes for 152 yards to lead all receivers. Wright led Choctaw rushers with 65 yards on nine carries.

Jones led West Alabama with seven tackles, including two for loss. Felix Woods had six stops, followed by Virgin and Tavarious Hutchinson with five each. Michael Williams and Terry Samuel also recorded two tackles for loss for the Tigers, who finished the game with 13 plays behind the MC line of scrimmage.

Kris Reliford and Mike Hall had eight tackles each for the Choctaws.

West Alabama and North Alabama are scheduled to kick off at 6 p.m. Saturday at Tiger Stadium. Go HERE to purchase tickets.
