Tigers Down Tritons in Season Opener

COLUMBUS, Ga. – Chelsea Commings extended her perfect shot-on-goal percentage into the 2016 season, netting the game-winning goal on her only shot of the match as West Alabama women's soccer defeated Eckerd College 1-0 at the CSU Collegiate Invitational on Friday.

The Tigers begin the season 1-0, while Eckerd falls to 1-1 on the year.

"We showed great character today to keep going for the whole 90 minutes," said UWA head coach Graeme Orr. "Of course, we have areas to improve and our match fitness will develop, but I'm very proud of continuing to be brave on the ball, and I think we got the reward with Chelsea's goal. Sunday will be a tough test. It's a short recovery time, so the challenge now is to refuel, review and be ready come kick off."

West Alabama Pre-Season All-GSC selection Kirsten Reilly picked up her first assist of the season with a lead pass to Commings, who out ran the defender and beat the keeper on the left side of the goal in the 87th minute. Commings' goal was her second-career game-winner.

UWA goalkeeper Issy Foster (1-0) picked up the win, making six saves against the Tritons. Casey Winn (1-1) takes the loss, allowing just one goal while facing seven shots.

The Tigers will remain in Columbus, Georgia, to face off against Lincoln Memorial on Sept. 4. Kickoff is set for 8 a.m.
