Briana Sandifer and
Taylin McCarver combined for 24 kills as the University of West Alabama volleyball team swept West Georgia 3-0 in Gulf South Conference play at Pruitt Hall on Thursday.
The Tigers improve to 8-4 overall, moving to 2-2 in conference action. The Wolves fall to 3-8 on the year, dropping to 0-4 in league play.
"I saw a sense of urgency tonight that I haven't seen before," UWA head coach
Alexis Meeks said. "We came out hot, and we finished hot."
"For us, that's been a big issue this year. We always talk about consistency from the start. We want to start strong and finish strong, and I think we did a good job of that tonight."
After trailing 11-4 in the first set, West Georgia battled back to tie the set at 14-14. West Alabama outscored the Wolves 11-8, taking the first set by a score of 25-22.
The lead changed hands five times throughout the second set before the Tigers went on a 16-8 run to close out the set 25-16.
UWA was especially dominant in the third set, combining to hit a .333 attack percentage while holding UWG to -.182 in a 25-12 set victory.
McCarver recorded 12 kills on 16 total attacks to finish with a .625 hitting percentage. Sandifer also picked up 12 kills in the match, recording a .381 hitting percentage.
Abby Ames led the Tigers defensively with 10 digs.
UWA combined to hit a .387 attack percentage through all three sets, while UWG finished with .096. Jaida Allen and Katie Hanson each tallied seven kills, leading the Wolves' attack. Tess Watson earned six digs to lead the West Georgia defense.
The Tigers will return to action on the road, taking on Mississippi College in a GSC match on Saturday. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
