Football Game Preview - UWA vs UNA

THE SERIES
This is the 70th meeting between the Tigers and the Lions. UNA leads the series 51-17-1. UNA is 19-11-1 in games played in Livingston.
 
WEST ALABAMA
West Alabama is 1-2 overall and 1-0 in the GSC after a 38-13 win at Mississippi College last week. This is the home opener for UWA.
 
NORTH ALABAMA
North Alabama, ranked 19th by AFCA/7th by D2Football is 1-1 overall and 1-0 in GSC play after a convincing 44-19 win at home over Valdosta State last week.
 
THE COACHES
Brett Gilliland is 13-12 in his third season at UWA, his third as a head coach. Bobby Wallace is 116-50-1 in his 15th season at UNA, 161-151-1 in his 28th year as a collegiate head coach.

LAKENDRIC SECOND
West Alabama running back Lakendric Thomas is second in the GSC in rushing, averaging 103.7 yards per game. He leads the league in total yards rushing and carries with 311 yards on 57 trips.
 
POE A TIGER AND A LION
UNA linebackers coach Gabe Poe played at West Alabama in 2010 and 2011, earning All-GSC honors in 2011 before graduating from UWA in 2012. He then played at UNA in 2013 as a graduate student and led the Lions in tackles with 128 tackles.
 
TRAY WITH FOUR
Tiger receiver Tray Fletcher is second in the GSC with four touchdowns scored. He had two at Mississippi College last week.

GILLILAND vs. NORTH ALABAMA
Tiger head coach Brett Gilliland is 0-2 against North Alabama as a head coach, 1-3 as a player at West Alabama.
 
WALLACE CONNECTION
Bobby Wallace has been the head coach at both UNA and UWA. In five years as the head man at West Alabama, Wallace led the Tigers to three winning seasons in five years and the first playoff appearance in 34 years.
 
TIGERS IN THE NFL
  • In two games Kansas City WR Tyreek Hill has three receptions for 17 yards and a TD.
  • In two games Oakland WR Seth Roberts has five catches for 44 yards and a TD.
  • In the first three games of the season New England CB Malcolm Butler has 16 tackles, 12 solo, and four passes defended.

TIGERS IN THE CFL
  • In 12 games Saskatchewan Roughriders linebackers Otha Foster has recorded 46 tackles, including three sacks, and has forced a fumble.
  • In 12 games Edmonton Eskimos linebacker Deon Lacey has made 75 tackles, intercepted two passes (one for a pick six) and has a quarterback sack.
  • Saskatchewan Roughriders offensive lineman Kennedy Estelle has played in seven games.

NUMBERS TIP TOWARD TIGERS
UWA is averaging 84.8 yards more per game total offense than the Lions and are holding opponents to 96.5 yards per game less.
 
ONE OF CLEAN 16
West Alabama is one of just 16 teams in NCAA Division II not to have thrown an interception this season. Quarterbacks Austin Grammer and Harry Satterwhite have combined to throw 119 passes without being picked off.
 
CHANGE UP
For the first time in over 30 years the Tigers and Lions aren't playing in one of the last three weeks of the season. UWA and UNA have traditionally played the final week of the regular season, but a flip of the GSC schedule has the rivals playing in September this year.
 
BIG RED ZONE
West Alabama has been very effective inside the red zone this season, getting points on 11 of 12 visits and scoring touchdowns on 10 of 12.
