FLORENCE, Ala. –
TeMia Pride and
Kirsten Reilly combined for two first half goals within five minutes as West Alabama women's soccer defeated North Alabama 3-1 in Gulf South Conference action on Sunday.
The Tigers improve to 5-2 overall, improving to 3-0 in conference play. The Lions fall to 3-5, dropping to 2-2 in the league.
"Today we went into a difficult environment and came away with three points, so I am over the moon," UWA head coach
Graeme Orr said. "We had excellent composure in the final third, and that gave us a huge lift."
"We gave away a schoolboy goal, and for three or four minutes we looked a bit rocky. We lost our composure, but we got the ball down and played our game. We got our reward with the third goal on the counter attack."
The Tigers got on the board first after Reilly moved the ball in from the right side to assist Pride on her fourth goal of the season, giving UWA a 1-0 advantage in the 28
th minute.
Five minutes later, Reilly and Pride switched roles as Reilly scored on an assist from Pride to put the Tigers ahead 2-0.
The Lions cut into the Tigers' lead in the 56
th minute after Eleanor Costello scored on a penalty kick, moving the score line to 2-1.
Isabella Gill netted her first collegiate score in the 86
th minute to give the Tigers a final 3-1 lead.
Issy Foster (5-2) earned the win, making three saves while facing 13 shots. Kate Webster (2-5) took the loss, allowing three goals while making four saves.
West Alabama will continue on the road, facing off against Barry University in Valdosta, Georgia, on Tuesday. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m.
