LIVINGSTON, Ala. – An 83
rd minute header was the dagger in West Alabama's back as Mississippi College dealt UWA women's soccer its first Gulf South Conference loss, defeating the Tigers 1-0 at Tiger Stadium on Friday.
The Tigers fall to 5-4 on the season, dropping to 3-1 in conference action. The Choctaws improve to 6-2-1, moving to 3-0-1 in the league.
"When you lose a game, you have to be able to take away some positives from it to understand how you can get better," UWA head coach
Graeme Orr said. "I thought we were a bit off pace in the first half. We battled well in the second half and just got caught on one set piece."
"It was always going to be the odd goal. We've played them before and ended up on the right side of the score line with the odd goal. They're an excellent side, and I'm sure they will be high up in the conference. Every game in this league is tough. Now we need to refocus for Sunday to see if we can come away with three points."
The defense-heavy match sat scoreless for 82 minutes until a handball foul set Mississippi College up with a free kick opportunity from 31 yards outside of the goal. Lauren Katie Carter launched the ball into the penalty area, allowing Caitlin Hayes to put a header in the back of the net.
Andrea McDonald (5-2-1) earned the win, making three saves in her third shutout of the year.
Issy Foster (5-4) made six saves on 13 shots faced in the loss.
The Tigers will return to action with home-field advantage against Delta State in GSC play on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
