UWF Shuts Tigers Down in Second Half for 65-48 GSC Women’s Win

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Florida limited West Alabama to just four points in the fourth quarter on the way to a 65-48 Gulf South Conference women's basketball win over the Tigers Thursday at Pruitt Hall Gym.

After leading 35-34 at the half, West Alabama managed just 13 points in the second half on the way to its sixth straight loss. The Tigers are 4-11 overall, 1-7 in GSC play. West Florida is 11-3 and 6-2.

"We have no inside-outside game. Four free throw attempts in a whole game pretty much tells you that," UWA coach Rusty Cram said. "We are obviously not a very good basketball team and it's very frustrating."

In addition to shooting just 29 percent from the floor (20-for-67), the Tigers made 3-of-4 from the free throw line. West Florida was 27-of-63 (.429) from the floor and 9-of-23 (.391) from the line. The Argos outrebounded the Tigers 49-41.

"When we made our run in the second quarter it was with young people in the game. Our upperclassmen aren't making anything happen," Cram said. "West Florida is a good basketball team, but that is no excuse for us not playing 40 minutes.

Trailing 23-12 after one quarter, West Alabama opened the second quarter with an 8-0 run and finished the first half on a 23-11 run to take a one-point lead into the break. After scoring just nine points in the third period, UWA's first basket in fourth quarter came with 3:09 left in the game on a jumper in the paint from Caleb Washington.

Katie Bobos scored 15 points to lead West Florida scoring. Toni Brewer scored 13 and collected 20 rebounds for the Argos. Katie O'Neal chipped in 11 points and Courtney Meyer had 13 rebounds.

Sydney King scored 12 and Kierra Groce 10 for West Alabama. King had six rebounds.

West Alabama travels to Valdosta State Saturday. West Florida is host to West Georgia, also on Saturday.
