Valdosta State Holds Off UWA Women for 69-60 GSC Win

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Alabama cut an 18-point deficit to four with just over two minutes to play, but could get no closer as Valdosta State hung on for a 69-60 Gulf South Conference women's college basketball win at Pruitt Hall Gym Saturday.

Valdosta State improved its record to 12-8 overall and 9-5 in the GSC. West Alabama dropped to 6-14 and 3-10.

West Alabama struggled early, going seven minutes without scoring and 8:37 without a field goal in the first half. After scoring just five points in the first quarter, the Tigers closed the second period by playing the Lady Blazers even over the last five minutes, trailing 30-18 at the break.

"We just couldn't score early. We went 2-for-11 from three in the first half," UWA coach Rusty Cram said. "When you aren't scoring from the perimeter you better get to the free throw line and not turn the ball over."

West Alabama made just six trips to the free throw line in the first half and just five more in the second half, converting just four. The Tigers turned it nine times in the first 20 minutes. VSU was 19-of-28 from the free throw line in the game.

Valdosta State never trailed, building its lead to 18 points late in the second quarter. UWA hung around and cut the Lady Blazer lead to 60-56 on a jumper by Catherine Taylor with 2:08 left in the game. The Tigers would get no closer.

Valdosta State converted a pair of layups and hit 3-of-4 free throws in the final 1:06 of the game to ice the game away.

"We had some mental breakdowns in paint late in the game," Cram said. "They are a good ball club, so they don't need our help."

Ariel Wilson scored 23 points and Taylor 20 to lead the Tigers. Wilson had seven rebounds to lead UWA. Peyton Parker dished out six assists.

Madi Mitchell scored 27 for Valdosta State to lead all scorers/ Sonya Franklin chipped in 18 and Kenya Samone Dixon 13. Franklin grabbed nine rebounds.
