Lane and Stallworth Lead UWA to 61-54 Win at Mississippi College

CLINTON, Miss.Jahmal Lane scored 21 points, including making five free throws in the last 55 seconds, to lead West Alabama to a 61-54 Gulf South Conference college basketball win over Mississippi College Saturday at Wood Coliseum.

The win was the fourth consecutive for West Alabama (8-4, 3-3). Mississippi College (3-7, 0-6) has lost six straight games.

West Alabama trailed by 10 points with 7:22 left in the first half and only led for just over nine minutes in the game. The Tigers took their first lead with 12:08 left to play on a jumper by Sean Cranney.

"Talk about grinding one out, but we really did a great job of executing down the stretch," UWA coach Allen Sharpe said. "The more close games you play, the better you get at it."

West Alabama came into the game 10th in the nation and the GSC leader in defense, allowing just 63.6 points per game, and held Mississippi College to 19 points below their season scoring average.

"Our defense gives us a chance. When you hold people, you always have a chance," Sharpe said. "As bad as our first half was, we were only down by one, so we could go in and flush that and get back to business."

Johnny Stallworth followed Lane with 14 points, nailing a trio of three-pointers in the second half. Lane had eight rebounds to lead the Tigers and Cranney dished out eight assists.

"Johnny Stallworth has been really good for us," Sharpe said. "He was a great pickup for us just before school started."

Antonio Johnson scored 15 points to lead Mississippi College. Stacey Mack and Xavion Dillon chipped in 10 apiece for the Choctaws. Brandon Boston led all rebounders with 10.

West Alabama completes a brief GSC road swing at Delta State Monday. Tipoff is set for 7:30. Mississippi College is host to West Georgia on Monday.
