Delta State Snaps UWA Win Streak with 57-54 Victory

CLEVELAND, Miss. – Delta State survived a late West Alabama rally to pick up a 57-54 Gulf South Conference men's basketball victory over West Alabama Monday at Walter Sillers Coliseum.

The Statesmen snapped UWA's winning streak at four games and improved to 10-3 overall and 5-2 in league play. West Alabama is 8-5 and 3-4.

Delta State led 26-20 at the half after limiting West Alabama to just eight made field goals in 25 first-half attempts (32%). The Tigers made just two of their first 10 shots, while the Statesmen were 7-of-10 to begin the game.

West Alabama continued to grind, cutting the Statesman lead to 38-37 with a pair of free throws by Billy Ingram with 9:12 to play. The Tigers then missed 10 of their next 12 field goal attempts as DSU extended its lead back to eight points.

West Alabama cut the Statesmen lead to 48-45 with 3:54 left when Gavin Robinson completed an old-fashioned three-point play. Three Tiger turnovers in less than two minutes and the Statesmen led 53-45 with 1:30 to play.

Although the Tigers never led, West Alabama refused to go away. Johnny Stallworth nailed a three-pointer from the right corner with 28.5 seconds left to cut the DSU lead to 53-50. Devin Schmidt then took the inbounds pass and went coast to coast for the layup with 23.2 to play to make it 55-50.

Gavin Robinson's layup with 13.6 seconds left pulled the Tigers back to within three points at 55-52. Schmidt converted a pair of free throws with 12.4 seconds to play to extend Delta State's lead to five. A Stallworth layup with a second left was too little, too late.

Jahmal Lane led West Alabama scoring with 12 points. Robinson chipped in 11 and Stallworth 10 for the Tigers. Domonique Alexander led UWA with six rebounds.

Schmidt scored 15 points to lead all scorers. Brett Warner was the only other Statesman in double figures with 11. Dietrich Taylor led all rebounders with nine.

West Alabama returns home to play West Florida on Monday. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. Delta State is host to North Alabama.
