LAST MEETING - OCT. 29, 2016 - PENSACOLA, FLA.
It couldn't have been a happier trip back home for West Alabama head coach Brett Gilliland as the Tigers defeated West Florida 45-21. UWA scored early and often, building a 28-7 lead by halftime, thanks mainly to quarterback Austin Grammer and receivers Barnard McGhee and Donta Armstrong. Grammer and McGhee hooked up for three touchdown passes in the first 30 minutes. Armstrong had 11 first-half receptions. West Alabama rang up 536 total yards in the game and limited the second-most potent offense in the GSC to 130 yards under its average.

NO. 2 IN REGION TWO
West Alabama is second in the initial NCAA Division II Super Region 2 poll. Wingate is the top seed, followed by UWA, Virginia State, Bowie State, Delta State, West Georgia, Catawba, Albany State, Miles and Virginia Union.
 
POLL WATCHING
Despite a narrow 41-39 loss at Florida Tech, the West Alabama football team dropped seven spots in this week's American College Football Coaches NCAA Division II Poll to No. 25.
 
ONLY GSC TEAM IN AFCA RANKINGS
The Tigers are the lone Gulf South Conference representative in the Top 25. Delta State (6-2) dropped out after a home loss to Valdosta State (3-3). The Statesmen, along with West Georgia (6-2) and West Florida (5-2), received votes.

This is the second week in a row that West Alabama will be featured in the Florida Space Coast Travel GSC Game of the Week. The game will be available on ESPN3, the Watch ESPN platform and the ESPN App.
 
VERSUS RANKED OPPONENTS
West Alabama is 3-0 this season against nationally ranked teams, defeating North Alabama and Delta State on the road and West Georgia at home.
 
FIRST 3, LAST 3
In its first three GSC games of the year UWA outscored opponents 142-30, but have outscored the last three just 102-98, winning by an average score of 47-10 in the first trio of GSC games, but just an average of 34-33 in the last three.
 
TIME OF GAME
UWA's longest game this season was at FIT last week, going 3:40. The shortest was against Mississippi College, lasting just 2:47.
 
WELCOME HOME
The UWA Athletic Department is inviting all former Tiger student-athletes, athletic trainers, administrators, managers and coaches from all sports to be recognized on the field prior to the football game against West Florida on Oct. 28. Former Tigers will line up across the South endzone and to be recognized over the stadium public address system prior to the game.?

COACH G TIED FOR FOURTH
Brett Gilliland comes into the game tied for fourth on the UWA all-time wins list with 25. A victory over UWF would tie Gilliland for third all-time with Bobby Wallace, who was 26-30 from 2006-10. He needs seven wins to become the all-time winningest coach in UWA football history.
 
HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES 73, 74 and 75
Former football stars Kendrick Office and Charles Martin, as well as softball great Valisha Fincher compose the 2017 induction class for the University of West Alabama Athletics Hall of Fame. They will serve as honorary captains for the game.
 
HOMECOMING HISTORY LESSON
UWA was chartered as a church-related female academy in 1835 and admitted its first students in 1839. It has been known as Livingston Female Academy and State Normal College, State Teachers College, Livingston State Teachers College and Livingston University. In 1995 the name of the institution was changed to the University of West Alabama.
