Strong first half leads UWA past Spring Hill 6-0

LIVINGSTON, Ala. –  Marie Dreezen put up a hat trick and the West Alabama Tigers scored four goals in the first half en route to a 6-0 victory over the Spring Hill College Badgers in Gulf South Conference action Monday night in Tiger Stadium.

UWA moves to 5-6 overall and 4-5 in conference while Spring Hill falls to 1-11 and 0-6 in the GSC.

"Really excited about the win," said Head Coach Graeme Orr. "I thought the girls worked extremely hard from the first whistle. I thought we had a good attack today and executed a number of chances, but also delighted we kept a clean sheet. I think the team worked really hard to make sure we didn't concede in tonight's game."

Dreezen scored the first two goals for the Tigers at the 13:10 off an assist from TeMia Pride and then just over three minutes later at the 16:28 mark unassisted to put the Tigers up 2-0. The Third goal for the hat trick came with 54:03 passed in the game off an assist from Chelsea Cummings. The three goals put Dreezen's season total to a team leading six.

Haleigh Kimble scored her two goals of the season off an assist from Bailee Martin at the 41:16 mark and then once more in the second half unassisted at the 75:45 mark. Megan McGettigan knocked a shot in from midfield to put UWA 4-0.

"I thought we could've had a number of goals tonight and I was delighted we executed," said Orr. "We scored a number of long range efforts and had some good strikes."

UWA outshot the Badgers 16-3 with Dreezen leading the charge taking four shots. Yenni Aarniva saved two shots in the victory.

This contest was originally scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 8, but was moved to Monday night through to the threat of inclement weather from Hurricane Nate.

"We have a couple of tough games this week. Unfortunately, the game got delayed 24 hours, so now it's about rest, recovery and making sure the team comes out with the same intensity," said Orr.

UWA returns to action Friday at 5 p.m. against Union in GSC action and will celebrate senior night. Spring Hill travels to Cleveland, Miss. to face Delta State.
