Eckerd Spoils West Alabama Season Opener, 68-46

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Three Tritons scored in double figures as Eckerd ruined West Alabama's 2017-18 regular season women's basketball opener with a 68-46 victory on the first day of the Sunshine State Conference-Gulf South Conference Challenge Friday.
 
Kacie Juday scored 15 points and Brook Juday chipped in 12 more for the Tritons. Zoe Richards had 12 points for Eckerd, who led 33-20 at the half. Kacey Juday had six rebounds.
 
The Tritons hit 11 three-pointers while West Alabama was 0-for-10 from long distance. Eckerd made 9-of-11 free throws, while the Tigers managed 12-of-19 in a game where Eckerd led from start to finish.
 
The Triton defense forced 26 West Alabama turnovers as the Tigers managed just five assists while shooting 34 percent from the floor. Eckerd scored 23 points off Tiger turnovers. UWA was 7-of-23 from the field in the first half.
 
Sydney Bozeman, Tazsa Garrett-Hammett and Chloe Culpepper scored eight points apiece to lead West Alabama scoring. Garrett-Hammett and Culpepper collected eight rebounds each for UWA, who controlled the boards 41-33.
 
West Alabama continues play in the SSC-GSC Saturday against Embry-Riddle (1-0). The Eagles defeated Christian Brothers, 68-58, on Friday to open their season.
