UWA falls in first round of GSC Tournament to Lee, 3-1

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The West Alabama Tigers battled mightily, but fell 3-1 to the No. 6 seed Lee University Flames in the first round of the Gulf South Conference Volleyball Championship Tournament.

UWA (18-25, 25-20, 23-25, 20-25) falls to 19-14 overall on the season while Lee improves to 20-9.

Briana Sandifer led with 10 kills, 13 digs and a block. Taylor Donato and Jamie Lancellot both registered eight kills. Donato led the team in blocks with four. GSC Co-Freshman of the Year Kassie Till led in assists with 23 and digs with 21. Rebecca Johnson had 19 digs.

The Tigers will now await the NCAA Division II Volleyball Selection Show to determine their postseason fate. Lee advances to play North Alabama. The win by the Flames was the second upset of the night as No. 5 seed Shorter defeated No. 4 seed UAH earlier in the evening.

Whether UWA advances to the NCAA Regional or not, the Tigers have enjoyed a resurgent season as a program as the 19 wins are the most since winning 21 games in 2011.
