Tigers beat AUM 91-77 to win 2017 Bahama House Shootout Tournament

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The West Alabama Tigers turned to a solid defensive effort once more to dispatch of the Auburn-Montgomery Warhawks 91-77 and claim the 2017 Bahama House Shootout Tournament Championship Saturday night on the campus of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

The Tigers end the weekend with a 5-2 overall record while fellow Gulf South Conference member AUM falls to 3-3.

"I put two things on the board before we came out here and it was defend and rebound," sajd Head coach Allen Sharpe. "We felt like it was going to be that simple whether or not we could keep their score low enough to give ourselves a chance to win."

After giving up 40 points in the first half, UWA turned up the tempo in the second period to force turnovers and pull away from the Warhawks.

While several Tigers finished in double figures on the night, it was the defensive effort of Domonique Alexander that caught the attention of Sharpe and AUM as the 6-foot-7 forward from New Orleans finished with five blocks on the night and nine blocks for both days of the weekend event.

"He has a big impact on the game and usually when people think impact they think about scoring, but he impacts the game on the defensive end," said Sharpe about Alexander. "He disrupts and alters so many shots around the basket. He's very important to what we're trying to do and I'm glad he was part of the All-tournament team. It's good confidence booster for him and a great indicator that not always do the best players get on the All-tournament team and he is on that team for what he did defensively."

Alexander ended the night with a double-double going for 14 rebounds and 10 points. Charles Eaton was named the Tournament MVP and led all scorers with 27 points along with three rebounds. Also on the All-Tournament team was Gavin Robinson who had 25 points, four rebounds, three blocks and two assists. Josh Fleming added 17 points, four assists and four rebounds while Sean Cranney dished 10 assists with five points and three steals.

"It gives us so much more fire power," said Sharpe of the offensive effort on the night. "We don't want to get where we hand Eaton the ball and say, "go win it for us." We want to be able to have Gavin, Josh and Sean Cranney make an open shot. We want to be balanced in what we're doing."

AUM's Lafayette James-Core led with 27 points thanks to a 7 of 9 effort from behind the arc and also made the all-tourney team.

Despite only making three shots from behind the arc, UWA did the dirty work with 40 points in the paint, making 30 of 35 free-throws and out rebounding the Warhawks 37-31.

The successful trip gives the Tigers much needed confidence and momentum heading into conference play.

"Winning is contagious just like losing is contagious," said Sharpe. "Hopefully by coming down here and beating a couple of good teams, we will get to where we start to expect to win. Hopefully it'll carry over into next week where we have two GSC games."

West Alabama returns to action Thursday night against GSC opponent North Alabama with tipoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Pruitt Hall.
