Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

UWA Women Win, 83-72, at West Florida

PENSACOLA, Fla. – West Alabama outscored West Florida by 23 points in the fourth quarter to notch an 83-72 Gulf South Conference women's basketball win at West Florida Saturday at the UWF Athletic Complex.

The win improved the Tigers to 5-6 overall, 2-2 in the GSC. West Florida had a four-game winning streak snapped and dropped to 6-3 and 1-1.

West Alabama was 3-of-20 from the floor in the first 10 minutes of the game and fell behind by 13 points with 2:26 left in the third quarter before roaring back to dominate the final 10 minutes of the game.

After the first quarter, the Tigers converted 26-of-51 from the floor (51 percent), with 35 points coming from the UWA inside combination of Chloe Culpepper and Sydney Bozeman, who had 19 and 16, respectively.

"Our kids were relentless today," UWA head coach Rusty Cram said. "When you beat last year's (regular season) conference champs on their own floor that says something."

West Florida stretched the lead to 13 points with 2:26 left in the third quarter, but UWA rallied to take a 66-65 lead with 5:06 left on an old-fashioned three-point play by Culpepper.

Tazsa Garrett-Hammett added 15 points for the Tigers and J'Nyiah Daniels chipped in 10 more. Bozeman and Garrett-Hammett had seven rebounds each to lead the Tigers, with Culpepper and Kierra Groce grabbing six each.

Both the Tigers and the Argonauts had 40 rebounds in the game, but UWA won the offensive boards 13-8 and converted 22 UWF turnovers into 22 points.

Averaging 20 miscues per game, West Alabama committed a season-low nine turnovers. The Tigers bench outscored West Florida 37-11.

"Depth was a big factor. When your bench outscores them by that much it helps build confidence," Cram said. "We had two turnovers in the second half. That is monumental."

Shami Goodman scored 28 points for West Florida to lead all scorers. Belle Bistrow added 17. Halee Nieman collected 10 rebounds for the Argonauts.

West Alabama closes its two-game pre-Christmas road trip at Valdosta State on Monday. Tipoff is 5 p.m. central. West Florida is host to Montevallo the same day.
