Lee Survives to Beat West Alabama, 77-75, in Double Overtime

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – Keevin Tyus and Rico Overall combined for 18 points in a pair of overtime periods as Lee defeated West Alabama, 77-75, in Gulf South Conference men's basketball Thursday at the Paul Dana Walker Arena.

West Alabama drops to 10-15 overall, 5-14 in the GSC. The Tigers have lost eight games this season by four points or less. Lee is 10-15 and 6-13.

"Just unbelievable. I have never seen anything quite like it," UWA coach Allen Sharpe said. "I hate to say this because it is our team, but we are just good enough to get beat. It's very discouraging.

"We should have won that basketball game, but how many times have we said that this year," Sharpe said. "I just hate it for this group of kids, because they are battling night in and night out."

With the score tied at 55-55 at the end of regulation, the Tigers and Flames took it down to the wire in both overtime periods.

Gavin Robinson hit one of two free throws to give UWA a 65-62 lead with 18.7 seconds left in the first overtime, but Rico Overall nailed a three-pointer and was fouled with 7.0 seconds left, but missed the free throw. Sean Cranney missed a jumper for the Tigers at the buzzer to necessitate a second overtime.

Jahmal Lane converted the old-fashioned three-point play with 16.8 seconds left in the second overtime to cut Lee's lead to 76-75. Overall then made one of two free throws before Lane was called for traveling with 0.5 seconds left. Ryan Montgomery missed two free throws and the Tigers just touching the rebound ran out the clock.

The Tigers got off to a slow start, falling behind 10-0 by the first media timeout at 15:40 in the first half. UWA missed its first eight shots from the floor before Billy Ingram drained a jumper at the 12:24 mark in the first half to make it 11-3 Lee.

"The start of this game was bad, but then we battle back and go into the half with the lead," Sharpe said. "Our defense continues to keep us in it, but we just don't have enough firepower on offense and we can't find anywhere to go in the lane."

West Alabama then went on an 18-11 run to cut the Lee lead to 21-18 with just over three minutes left in the half. After missing nine of its first 10 field goal attempts, West Alabama made six of its final 10 in the first half and 12-of-14 free throws to take a 27-26 lead into the intermission.

Overall finished with 21 points for Lee, followed by Cody Farley with 15 and Tyus with 14. Montgomery and Overall both had seven rebounds.

Lane scored 21 points to pace West Alabama, followed by Robinson with 16, Cranney with 14 and Jake Jobling with 11. Robinson collected a game-high 10 rebounds and Lane nine. Domonique Alexander blocked four shots.

West Alabama made 25-of-28 free throws. The Tigers and Flames both collected 28 rebounds.

West Alabama winds up the road portion of the regular season at Shorter on Saturday. Lee is host to West Georgia Saturday.
