Four in Double Figures for Lee as Lady Flames Stop UWA 71-58

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – Erin Walsh scored 22 points to lead four Lee players in double figures as the Lady Flames led from start to finish to beat West Alabama, 71-58, Thursday at the Paul Dana Walker Arena.

The win improved Lee to 18-7 overall, 13-6 in the GSC, and handed the Lady Flames a sweep over the Tigers in two games this season. West Alabama lost its eighth straight, falling to 6-20 overall, 3-16 in GSC play.

Neither team shot the basketball particularly well, with Lee converting 24-of-62 (38 percent) and West Alabama 18-of-54 (33 percent). Lee outrebounded the Tigers, 42-35, while both teams scored 24 points in the paint.

"Our post defense was as good as it has been all year. We just didn't have any scoring on the inside," UWA coach Rusty Cram said. "We just couldn't get the shots to fall."

UWA did not score for first 4:08 of the game, getting down 9-2. Tigers first basket came on a putback by Peyton Parker with 5:52 left in first quarter, and from there West Alabama rolled off an 11-6 run to trail by just four points after the first quarter.

Lee went on a 14-3 run to open the second quarter, withstood a UWA push late in the second quarter before leading 36-24 at the half. West Alabama shot just 28 percent (8-for-28) from the floor in the first two quarters, but Lee wasn't much better at 35 percent (12-for-34).

Lee stretched its lead to 20 points midway through the third quarter, but the Tigers clawed back to cut the Lady Flame lead to 50-36 after three periods. UWA cut the lead to eight points in the second half, but could get no closer.

"It was a game of runs and they are a lot deeper than we are," Cram said. "The game was decided in the first half when we got down early, but I like our kids' attitude right now. They won't give up."

Abby Bertram followed Walsh with 17 points, followed by Lindsey Roddy with 11 and Carrie Cheeks with 10. Cheeks collected a game-high eight rebounds.

Catherine Taylor and Sydney King were the only West Alabama players in double figures with 14 and 11 points, respectively. King and Chloe Culpepper both grabbed seven rebounds.

West Alabama travels to Shorter to end the regular season road schedule on Saturday. Lee is host to West Georgia.
