CBU Completes Season Sweep of UWA Men's Hoops with 81-63 GSC Win

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Christian Brothers gashed West Alabama for both the most points surrendered all season and its largest loss of the year, handling the Tigers 81-63 in Gulf South Conference men's basketball action at Canale Arena on Saturday.

With the win, the Buccaneers complete the season sweep of the Tigers and improve to 14-8 on the season, moving to 11-5 in the GSC. The Tigers fall for the fourth time in as many games, dropping to 9-12 overall and 4-11 in league play.

"We didn't make them feel uncomfortable on the floor at all tonight, and that is unacceptable," UWA head coach Allen Sharpe said. "Christian Brothers is a very efficient team, and when they get to play their game, they are hard to beat."

Christian Brothers began to pull away with the help of nine West Alabama turnovers, leading to 15 points in transition for the Buccaneers during the first half. CBU outscored UWA 30-15 through the remainder of the first 20 minutes, taking a 45-30 lead into the break.

The Buccaneers held an advantage over the Tigers at the free throw line, hitting 80 percent (4-5) of their attempts to the Tigers 69 percent (11-16), and from the floor with 18-of-29 good for 62 percent.

CBU also retained an edge from beyond the arc with a 56 percent (5-9) conversion rate to 50 percent (3-6) from UWA.

The Tigers played basket-for-basket with the Buccaneers during the second half, but Christian Brothers kept West Alabama out of striking distance, keeping no less than a 11-point lead for the remainder of the game to seal the 81-63 victory.

"Our defense has to be able to hold our opponents to lower point totals," Sharpe said. "We aren't going to score 80 points in a game, and our field goal percentage is down."

CBU edged UWA from the floor and beyond the arc, hitting 32-53 (60%) and 9-17 (53%) while the Tigers shot 21-39 (54%) and 5-11 (46%), respectively.

The Buccaneers biggest advantage came via assist-to-turnover ratio, finishing with 19 assists and six turnovers (3.17) while the Tigers ended with 10 assists and 16 giveaways (.63).

"We won't quit," Sharpe said. "We are going to stay at it and compete. We practice hard, and we coach hard. We just need a few more guys raise the level of play on this team."

Gavin Robinson led all scorers and rebounders with 26 points and eight boards. Jahmal Lane followed with 12 points for UWA, adding four rebounds and two steals. Domonique Alexander recorded six rebounds and two blocks.

Christian Brothers had four players hit double-digit point totals, led by Jeff Larkin with 17. Alex Trentman posted 15, hitting 6-of-7 field goals. Brad Miller followed with 12 points, while Adam Dieball netted 10.

The Tigers will return to Livingston for a GSC contest against Alabama-Huntsville on Thursday. Tip off at Pruitt Hall is slated for 7:30 p.m.
