Tyler Lee’s Solo Shot Lifts UWA to 3-2 Win at Union

JACKSON, Tenn.Tyler Lee's solo home run in the top of the ninth inning lifted West Alabama to a 3-2 Gulf South College baseball victory over Union Saturday at Fesmire Field.

The win secured the Tigers a win of the series over the Bulldogs. UWA (20-10, 11-7) and UU (21-9-10-7) split a doubleheader on Friday.

The homer was the second of the series for Lee, a senior from Birmingham, Alabama, and his third of the season. The Oak Mountain High School product blasted a line drive over the wall in left field with two outs and the scored tied at 2-2.

"That was a huge swing by Tyler Lee," UWA head coach Gary Rundles said. "He is a fifth-year senior who has worked hard for a long time for his opportunity. It's great to see him coming into his own."

The Tigers jumped to a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Brock Montgomery worked back from an 0-2 count to draw a leadoff walk to start the inning and scored on a one-out triple by Nick Delgado. Dylan Little's grounder to first chased Delgado.

Nolen Milton hit his hit his ninth homer, a solo shot in the third to cut the UWA lead in half. Zach Phillips ripped his seventh home run, another solo blast, to tie the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the eighth.

JC Redden (1-0) worked an inning in relief of Tiger starter Seth Holbert to pick up the win. Jonathan Porter got three outs in the ninth for his second save after inheriting a base runner with nobody out from Redden. Porter struck out two, including Zach Phillips with two runners on to end the game.

Union starter Skyler Harrison (2-2) was the hard luck loser, going the distance while walking one and striking out six. Holbert went seven innings, scattering six hits and allowing one run while striking out seven. Redden allowed a run and a hit in one inning.

"Seth did what we needed him to do and got us to the late innings," Rundles said. "JC did a nice job after giving up the home run to keep the game tied. We have used Porter so much this year and he just gutted it up and gave us what he had."

Lee was the only UWA player with more than one hit, adding a single to his home run. David Robins, Tyler Mauzy and Phillips had two hits apiece for Union.

West Alabama returns home for a non-conference game Tuesday against Auburn-Montgomery at 5 p.m. Union is home Tuesday against Trevecca Nazarene.
