LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Alabama combined for 17 hits, including three home runs as the Tigers swept Christian Brothers 8-0 and 6-4 in a Gulf South Conference double header at the UWA Softball Complex on Thursday.
With the wins, the Tigers snap a six-game skid, improving to 11-13 overall and 6-5 in the league. The Buccaneers fall to 4-20 on the season, dropping to 0-11 in GSC play.
"I thought the key to today's wins was
Andrea Edmonds pounding the strike zone," UWA head softball coach Carie Dever-Boaz said. "She threw one of her best games and had a great rhythm going in the first go-round. She really set the tone."
West Alabama jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the second with back-to-back, three-run frames.
Kierra Hague picked up an RBI on a ground ball to the shortstop, driving in
Audrey Diekmann, who reached on a lead-off double and advanced to third on a
Jenna Goldsmith single, to put UWA up 1-0.
Ashely Smart and
Chelsea Lobitos each recorded a run-batted-in in the inning to extend to the Tiger lead to 3-0.
Hague pushed West Alabama ahead 6-0 with a three-run shot over right center in the second. The homerun was Hague's second on the season.
"Kierra (Hague) and (Sarah Beth) King really hit the ball well, but we executed the short game beautifully, and that really allowed those big hits."
UWA tacked on a run in both the third and fourth innings, moving ahead 7-0 on an RBI single from
Devan Hines in the third before scoring the final run on a sacrifice fly from Smart in the fourth.
"We did a great job base running," Dever-Boaz said. "The ball beat us to the base a lot, but we made some great slides."
The Tigers stole four bases in Game 1, while the Buccaneers managed just one. UWA also out-hit CBU 9-1.
Goldsmith and Lobitos paced UWA with two hits apiece.
Ashley Stassin,
Ashlend Rodriguez, Hines, Diekmann and Hague each chipped in one hit. Olivia Parcels recorded the Buccaneers only hit.
Edmonds (7-9) earns the win, allowing just one hit while striking out seven of the 18 batters she faced. Julia Schassburger (2-9) takes the loss, giving up six runs in two innings of work.
"In the last game when they starting hitting the ball, no one blew up or lost their composure," Dever-Boaz said. "Our role players really stepped up too. Devan (Hines) came in a pinch-hitting situation and grabbed a hit, and (Brianna) Buie wore a pitch to get on base."
Christian Brothers struck first in the nightcap, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a solo shot off the bat of Kylie Steagall. However, West Alabama responded in the bottom of the frame, taking a lead they would not relinquish with a two-run bomb over left field from Stassin.
Sarah Beth King moved the score line to 3-0 in the second on a solo homer; her third on the year. Goldsmith and Hague each earned an RBI in the fourth, extending the UWA lead to 5-1.
A Tiger fielding error in the fifth allowed CBU to grab an unearned run as Maddi Welch crossed the plate to cut the deficit to 5-2.
UWA pushed the gap back to four in the fourth inning as a Rodriguez single drove in
Abby McKee to make the margin 6-2.
CBU pulled within two runs in the sixth, scoring Toni Rizzo and Parcels on a single to left field from Sierra Anderson.
After Amber Johnson reached on a lead-off single to start the Buccaneer half of the seventh, Edmonds forced two pop-ups to Smart at shortstop before sitting down the final CBU batter to secure the double-header sweep.
Diekmann led UWA at the plate, posting two hits including a double. Stassin and King's homers came on their only hits of the game. Goldsmith, Hague and Rodriguez each came away with a hit. Rizzo's two hits led the CBU lineup, while Abby Ferreira, Johnson, Parcels, Schassburger, Anderson and Steagall each posted a hit.
Ashley Stassin (4-4) earns the win, allowing three earned runs while sitting three batters down on the night. Edmonds recorded her first save of the season, forcing two pop-ups before striking out the final batter in relief of Stassin. Jenna Cotter (2-6) takes the loss, giving up five runs while walking three in three complete innings.
"The energy from the fans was fantastic today," Dever-Boaz said. "I don't think we could have asked for a better day for Cystic Fibrosis awareness. I'm anxious to see how much we raised for Children's Hospital."
The Tigers will wrap up the GSC series against Christian Brothers, with Game 3 on Friday. First pitch at the UWA Softball Complex is set for 2 p.m.
