Montgomery, Stafford, Morrisette Homer in Tiger Win

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Alabama rapped out 18 hits, including seven for extra bases, on the way to a 15-8 romp past William Carey Tuesday at Tartt Field.

The Tigers got home runs from Brock Montgomery, Marcus Morrisette and Taylor Stafford, along with a pair of doubles from Nick Delgado and a double each from Josh Winningham and Lincoln Stubbs.

"We definitely hit the baseball today and that is good to see coming into a conference weekend," UWA coach Gary Rundles said. "We were also able to play a lot of people and that is always good for team chemistry as we head down the stretch."

William Carey set the tone for the game by jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the second inning. The Crusaders send 12 batters to the plate and got six hits, including a bases-loaded triple by Tyler James.

West Alabama answered with five runs in the bottom of the second, added three more in the fourth and one in the fifth and would never trail again in its final non-conference home game of the season.

"I was pleased by the way we answered the bell after they put up the five spot," Rundles said. "We didn't panic and just went about our business."

Montgomery hit his fifth homer of the year, two-run shot over the wall in left field in the second. Morrisette also hit his fifth in the five-run second, a solo homer. Stafford belted his team-leading eighth of the year to open the fourth inning. Delgado doubled and later stole home to stretch the UWA lead to 9-5.

The Crusaders put up three runs in the top of the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Odom and bases-loaded walks drawn by Tyler Graves and James Land.

The Tigers added three runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to stretch the lead to the final margin. Stubbs' two-run double and an RBI single by Delgado accounted for the sixth-inning runs, while RBI singles by Luke Latham, Luke Phillips and Morrisette plated three in the seventh.

Leighton Lary (4-1), the second of seven West Alabama pitchers, was the winning pitcher. The true freshman from Mobile, Alabama, worked two innings, allowing a hit and striking out two. WCU reliever Lake Robertson (2-2) took the loss, allowing four runs on four hits while walking five and striking out five.

Delgado and Stafford had three hits each to lead UWA. Winningham, Phillips, Morrisette and Stubbs chipped in two hits apiece. Phillips drove in three runs.

Land had three hits to apiece a 12-hit Crusader attack. Garrett Shano and Wes Brown had two hits each for William Carey.

West Alabama returns to Gulf South Conference play with a doubleheader Friday at Shorter. First pitch is set for noon CDT. William Carey plays at Stillman Wednesday.
