LIVINGSTON, Ala. – No. 18 Alabama Huntsville made two, first-inning runs stand, edging out West Alabama 2-0 in Gulf South Conference softball action at the UWA Softball Complex on Friday.
The Chargers move to 37-14 on the season, improving to 22-9 in league play for a one game advantage over West Florida (36-12, 20-9 GSC) for the No. 1 seed in the GSC Tournament. West Alabama falls to 21-29 overall, dropping to 11-20 in the GSC.
"I thought our girls battled really well today," UWA head coach Carie Dever-Boaz said. "It was really frustrating to have those mistakes in the first inning, but we recovered well."
"We got under the ball a lot in some key situations, but I thought our speed really showed on the base paths. AC (Storey) to Jenna (Goldsmith) put some pressure on them with infield singles."
Kaitlyn Bannister became the first UAH base-runner, reaching on a two-out single in the top of the first before a single from Tyler Harrison on the next at bat pushed Bannister across for a 1-0 Charger lead.
Harrison, who advanced to third on the previous play, crossed the plate thanks to a single off the bat of Erin Jewell one batter later, extending the Charger lead to a final 2-0.
"We never quit playing," Dever-Boaz said. "That's the number one team in the conference, and we lost by two runs. We were just one swing or one defensive play away from being right where we needed to be."
Ashley Cornell paced UAH at the plate with two hits. Bannister, Harrison and Jewel chipped in a hit each, while the latter two drove in both Charger runs.
Jenna Goldsmith led UWA with two hits.

Harrison (17-7) earns the win, disallowing a run on six hits while striking out four batters in her 16
th complete outing. Edmonds (16-24) takes the loss giving up two runs on five hits in her 21
st complete game of the season.
The Tigers and Chargers will conclude the GSC series on Saturday, facing off in a double header at the UWA Softball Complex at noon.
