LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Florida extended its winning streak to 22 consecutive victories, sweeping West Alabama 13-1 and 12-2 in a Gulf South Conference softball double header at the UWA Softball Complex on Saturday.
The Argonauts improve to 32-8 overall, moving up to second place in the conference3 standings with a 16-7 mark among league competition. The Tigers drop their third straight, falling to 18-22 on the season with a 9-14 record in the GSC.
"It was an ugly day," UWA head coach Carie Dever-Boaz said. "We didn't pitch or play defense well. I think we were playing on our heels most of the day, and there was really nothing positive to take away from this."
West Alabama struck first in the opener, taking a 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the first on an RBI single off the bat of
Brianna Buie. However, West Florida would take a lead they would not relinquish in the top of the next frame as Jacey Castro belted a three-run homer over left center.
The Argos tacked on two runs in both the third and fifth innings before an offensive explosion brought six runs across the plate on six hits in the sixth, propelling UWF to the 13-1 Game 1 victory.
Castro led all batters in the opener, driving in three runs-batted-in on three hits. Caitlin Steel posted three RBIs on a sacrifice fly and a two-run homer. Meghan Toney, Rhiannon Sassman, Jacquelynne Poling, Baleigh Boltz, Rachel Wright and Kara Wilson each chipped in a hit. Buie recorded the Tigers' lone hit.
"Our offense is struggling big time," Dever-Boaz said. "Four hits over two games puts a ton of pressure on your pitching staff and defense to make up for it."
West Florida scored quick and early in the second game, jumping out to a 5-0 lead after the first frame, starting with a two-run single from Tiona Hill. Boltz and Poling each singled in a run before a successful double steal with runners at the corners capped the Argos' offensive production in the inning.
The Tigers' cut an 8-0 deficit to six runs in the third frame as
Audrey Diekmann led-off the inning with a solo shot over right center for her 12
th homerun of the season.
Ashley Stassin later capitalized on a bases-loaded situation, scoring Jenna Goldmsith on a sacrifice fly.
UWF's final seven runs came via the long ball as Boltz ripped off consecutive three-run homers in back-to-back plate appearances in the third and fourth, while Castro posted her second homer of the day, a solo shot to lead-off the fourth.
Boltz tallied seven RBIs on three hits to lead all batters in Game 2. Toney and Hill each contributed a pair of base hits, while Castro and Poling turned in a hit apiece. Diekmann,
Allison Craft and
Ashlend Rodriguez recorded each of UWA's three hits.
Becca Taylor (18-5) earns the Game 1 win, allowing just one run on one hit while striking out six batters. Sarah Maloney (10-2) earns the win in Game 2, surrendering two runs on three hits and retiring four.
Andrea Edmonds (14-17) takes both loses on the day, giving up just three earned runs on six hits in the opener before getting pegged for eight earned runs in the finale.
"It's not a matter of whether these girls have quit or don't care," Dever-Boaz said. "In a lot of ways they almost care too much. They try to do too much at once instead of taking what the game has given to them.
"Now it's matter of getting back to the basics. We need to start attacking the ball offensively, and stop playing offense on defense and vice versa."
The Tigers and Argos will wrap up the GSC series on Sunday. First pitch for Game 3 at the UWA Softball Complex is slated for 1 p.m.
