Tigers Advance to GSC Championship Game With 5-2 Win over UNA

CLEVELAND, Miss. – West Alabama advanced to the championship game of the 2017 Gulf South Conference Baseball Tournament by defeating rival North Alabama, 5-2, in the final round of pool play Monday at Ferris Field on the campus of Delta State.

The Tigers will play the hosting Statesmen in the title game at 6 p.m. Tuesday in a one-game winner take all between the top two seeds in the tournament field. The win over the Lions also bolstered UWA's chances for an NCAA South Region Tournament bid, with those pairings due to be announced Sunday night.

West Alabama used timely hitting, big defensive plays and solid pitching performances to defeat UNA and even the record between the two at 2-2 for the season.

The Lions jumped to a 2-1 lead after two innings, but saw the lead vanish on a two-run home run from Dylan Little in the top of the fifth inning. Little's homer was his third of the year in an inning where the Tigers scored three runs. Luke Phillips also drove in a run with a ground ball in the frame.

UWA got on the board first when Nick Delgado walked to open the game and later scored on a single by Phillips, who is the 2017 GSC Freshman of the Year. North Alabama scored single runs in the first and second innings before UWA starter Layton Dill and closer Jonathan Porter shut the door for the final seven innings.

Dill (6-3) worked 6.1 innings for the win, allowing just one earned run on seven hits while striking out two and walking one. At one point Dill sat down 12 straight UNA hitters. Porter pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless baseball and did not allow a hit for his fifth save. UNA starter Devan Traglia (6-3) took the loss.

After the Tigers took the lead on Little's homer, a pair of defensive gems by left fielder Brock Montgomery in the bottom of the sixth helped cement the deal for the Tigers.

West Alabama picked up an insurance run in the top of the ninth when Josh Winningham doubled to lead off the inning and scored when UNA first baseman Kyle Hubbuch mishandled a sharp ground ball off the bat of Taylor Stafford.

Delgado extended his hitting streak to 16 games with a single and has now reached base in 50 of 51 games. Little and Winningham had a pair of hits for West Alabama. Delgado scored two runs.

Peyton Sockwell and Ben Cooley had two hits apiece for North Alabama. Dill and Porter did not allow an extra base hit for the Lions.

Tuesday's title game can be heard live on ESPN 104.9 in the Twin States area and globally on the espn1049 app.
