Big Innings Lift Delta State to 6-3 Win Over UWA In GSC Title Game

CLEVELAND, Miss. – Delta State used two three-run innings to beat West Alabama, 6-3, and win the 2017 Gulf South Conference Baseball Championship Tuesday at Ferris Field.

Delta State improved its record to 41-11, won its 14th GSC title and the automatic qualifier spot for the NCAA South Region Tournament. West Alabama dropped to 34-19 and awaits the decision of the regional committee for its continued postseason fate.

"We are waiting with expectations this year," UWA coach Gary Rundles said. "After how this team has played this year, if we don't get in it will be the biggest sham I know of."

Delta State jumped to a 3-0 lead on a three-run homer from tournament most outstanding player Zach Shannon, his 18th of the season, in the third inning. The Statesmen scored three more in the seventh when Clay Casey's bases-loaded popup found the grass in shallow right field between three Tiger defenders.

West Alabama scored single runs in the third, fourth and eighth innings. UWA catcher Tyler Lee drove in two of those with RBI singles. Joel Murphy's RBI single in the third chased Brock Montgomery, who had doubled to start the inning.

Down 6-2 in the ninth, Taylor Stafford singled with one out but was erased at second base on a grounder to second base by Luke Phillips. Second base umpire Tim Cooper said Stafford slid out of the baseline to take out DSU shortstop Justin Nussbaum and called Phillips out on Stafford's interference to end the championship game.

"I have been in this a long time and thought I had seen it all," Rundles said. "To end a game the way this one ended hurts more than actually losing the game.

"This is a game of inches and Delta is a great baseball team, maybe one of the best in the country," Rundles said. "They capitalized on our mistakes and made plays when we barreled up balls. You tip your hat to them."

Peyton White (4-1) picked up the DSU win in relief, working 2.2 innings and allowing one run on two hits. UWA starter Braxton Wallace (1-3) took the loss, allowing three runs on five hits in 3.2 innings pitched.

Lee had three hits to pace an 11-hit UWA attack. Dylan Little chipped in two more.

Jason Popovich was the only DSU player with multiple hits, contributing two of six Statesmen hits.
