UWA Wins Men’s Soccer Season Opener

Box Score

JACKSON, Tenn.Keegan McQueen scored a pair of goals with Jean-Baptiste Meyniel assisting on both to lift the University of West Alabama men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Union Friday at the Smith Memorial Soccer Complex.

Union's Robel Dent, who had a match-high five shots, guided in a penalty kick for a goal at the 22:11 mark and the two teams went to the intermission tied at 1-1.

"It's always good to start the season with a win, but Union made it difficult for us tonight," West Alabama coach Matte Thorne said. "There are a lot of things we need to clean up, like being more effective implementing our game plan consistently, but that is expected early in the season.

"Captain Keegan McQueen changed the game with two great headers to give us the win," Thorne said. "I am glad the lads showed good character and desire to battle."

Liam Ireland had four shots to lead West Alabama. West Alabama had four shots on goal and Union just two.

Tiger keeper Bradley Louis faced 10 shots and had one save. Union goalie Casper Nyberg faced 19 and had a pair of saves.

West Alabama is host to Mobile University in its 2017 home opener Monday at 7 p.m. Union is host to Southern Indiana on Sunday.
