Pair of Pride Goals Leads Tigers to 3-0 Win at Delta State

CLEVELAND, Miss. – TeMia Pride scored a pair of goals to lead the University of West Alabama women's soccer team to a 3-0 Gulf South Conference victory over Delta State Sunday at Delta Field.

The victory improved West Alabama to 2-2 overall, 1-1 in GSC play. Delta State dropped to 0-4 and 0-2.

"I am happy we got that first conference win," UWA coach Graeme Orr said. "It is always tough to start the conference season with a pair of games on the road.

"Friday was a close game at Mississippi College and took a lot out of us, but credit our ladies with executing three good goals today," Orr said. "Credit Delta State. They played well and proved that the GSC is a top Division II conference."

Pride scored her first goal at 20:08, unassisted across the face right of the Delta State keeper. Her second came at 79:33, a near post long ball assisted by Ellie McKenzie.

Sandwiched in between Pride's goals, Danielle Gilson scored with a header off the corner, assisted by Brianna Forrest, at the 38:05 mark to give UWA a 2-0 advantage at the break.

West Alabama outshot Delta State 14-8, with the Tigers getting nine shots on goal to three by the Lady Statesmen. Pride took six of UWA's shots, five on goal.

Tiger goal keeper Jenni Aarniva stopped all three DSU shots on goal on her way to the shutout. Delta State keeper Ana Branch had six saves.

West Alabama remains in GSC play by hosting West Florida on Friday at Tiger Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. The Tigers are also set to entertain Valdosta State on Sunday at 1 p.m. as part of a three-match home stand.
