No. 6 West Florida Hangs on to Beat UWA, 3-2

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – An own goal early in the match ended up being the difference as West Florida edged West Alabama, 3-2, in Gulf South Conference women's soccer Friday at Tiger Stadium.
 
The win improved the sixth-ranked Argonauts to 4-0 overall, 1-0 in GSC play. West Alabama dropped to 2-3, 1-2 in league play.
 
The own goal came at 6:56 to hand the Argos an early lead, then Leonie Kriel stretched the UWF advantage to 2-0 by scoring off an assist by Georgia Bailey.
 
 "I am very proud of the way we played against one of the top teams in the nation," UWA head coach Graeme Orr said. "We got ourselves back into the game and had a chance to tie it at the end. We didn't give up."
 
Anele Komani scored unassisted for West Alabama in the 16th minute to cut the lead to 2-1, but Jessica Quixley found the net at the 40:25 mark to give UWF a 3-1 lead at the half. Denisha Blackwood had the assist.
 
West Alabama continued to battle, cutting the score to the final margin with a goal by Ellen Sandstroem off an assist by Chelsea Commings.
 
West Alabama returns to the pitch Sunday, hosting Valdosta State at 1 p.m. Sunday.
