Valdosta State Scores 4-3 Win over Tigers in Extra Time

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Asshley Lewis headed in the golden goal to complete Valdosta State's came from behind 4-3 women's Gulf South Conference soccer victory over West Alabama Sunday at Tiger Stadium.
 
On a day with the heat index at 98 degrees, Valdosta State came from a 3-1 deficit to improve its record to 4-1 overall, 2-1 in GSC play. West Alabama dropped to 2-4 and 1-3.
 
"Give all the credit to Valdosta State. They got down by a pair of goals and continued to battle," UWA head coach Graeme Orr said. "We will continue to work and continue to improve."
 
Goals by Ellie McKenzie and Marie Dreezen at 38:51 and 44:45, respectively, sent West Alabama to the intermission with a 2-0 lead. The goals were the first of the season for both McKenzie and Dreezen. Brianna Forrest earned the assist on Dreezen's goal.
 
Taylor Snell scored the Blazers first goal in the 58th minute to cut the Tiger lead to 2-1, but Anele Komani's third goal of the year a minute later extended West Alabama's lead to what looked to be a comfortable 3-1 advantage.
 
Haille Paterson came off the Blazer bench and refused to let Valdosta State wilt, netting goals at 71:54 and 84:06 to force extra time and set up Lewis' game winner. Mallory McDaniel had the assist on Paterson's first goal.
 
Tiger keeper Jenni Aarniva recorded five saves as VSU attempted nine shots on goal, 15 shots overall. West Alabama also attempted 15 shots, nine on goal, against a pair of VSU goalies. Alyssa Curtis started the match, giving up two goals and saving one. Caroline Embler earned with win by saving five.
 
West Alabama returns to the pitch on Friday, hosting West Georgia at 5 p.m. Valdosta State is host to Delta State Friday at 7 p.m.
