Tigers overcome early miscue for victory over West Georgia

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – An early goal just seconds in for West Georgia seemed to spell trouble, but the West Alabama Tigers rallied with a score from Marie Dreezen and forced an own-goal to secure a 2-1 victory in Gulf South Conference competition.

Dreezen's third goal of the season came with 14:41 passed on the clocked to get the Tigers on the board.

"I was very pleased. We responded well from an early goal," said Head Coach Graeme Orr. "It was a test of character. The most important thing to me was getting the three points (for a win) and we did that.

That early goal came from UWG's Francessca Ellis just 37 seconds into the match.

An own goal by West Georgia 30:12 into the first half gave the Tigers a 2-1, which UWA rode to victory.

"I thought in the late stages of the first half we played some good soccer and got the ball down," said Orr. "Near the end of the game it's always going to be nervous with a one goal lead, but I thought we closed the game very well."

With the win, West Alabama improves to 3-4 overall and 2-3 in GSC action while the Wolves fall to 2-4 overall and 2-3 in conference.

"Every game in the conference is extremely tough. I think we've shown that," said Orr. "The games we've lost have been by the own-goal and to be honest some of them could've gone the other way. But we're not feeling sorry for ourselves for the position we're in. Now we've got to fight every game"

UWA returns to action on Sunday hosting North Alabama in another important GSC match. West Georgia travels to UAH to face the Chargers on Sept. 24.
