Tiger Volleyball Picks Up First Win, Downs Mercyhurst 3-1

CANTON, Ohio – The West Alabama volleyball team came from behind to win three straight sets and pick up its first win of the season, 3-1, over Mercyhurst Saturday at the Volleyball Hall of Fame City Challenge at Osborne Hall.

The victory improves West Alabama to 1-2. Mercyhurst drops to 0-4. The Tigers finish play in the tournament Saturday night at 6 p.m. against the University of Charleston.

Mercyhurst won the first set 25-20 before the Tigers stormed back for 26-24, 25-15 and 25-17 wins in sets two through four.

The Tigers put together attack percentages of .500 in the third set and .438 in the fourth. UWA hit .333 for the match with 11 blocks and seven service aces. Mercyhurst had a .151 hitting percentage for the match with 19 attack errors. The Lakers managed just four blocks, but had nine service aces.

Briana Sandifer led West Alabama with 15 kills and a .400 attack percentage, followed by Taylin McCarver with 12 and Jamie Lacellot with 10. Taylor Donato had four blocks, one solo, as well as three service aces.

Shelby Chesko had 11 kills to pace Merchyhurst.
