Tigers Blank VSU to Advance in GSC Championship Tournament

LIVINGSTON, Ala.– In front of a fired-up crowd in Tiger Stadium, the West Alabama Tigers shutout the Valdosta State Lady Blazers 2-0 in the Quarterfinals of the Gulf South Conference Women's Soccer Championship Tournament Tuesday night.

With the win, UWA advances to the semi-finals for the first time since 2016, the fifth time in six years, and notches the program's first 12-win season since 2014.

"Very proud of them for battling through injuries and trying to get people healthy," said Head coach Graeme Orr. "The girls really battled from first whistle to last whistle."

Abbi Russell scored the first UWA goal at the five-minute mark when Bailee Martin's shoot bounced off the crossbar giving Russell a chance for her second goal of the year.

Much later at the 78:15 mark, TeMia Pride hit her 18th goal of the season as the GSC Co-Player of the Year used an assist from Kaylah Butterworth to put the Tigers up for the 2-0 final score.

UWA outshot VSU 18-13. The Tigers had 11 shots on goal and VSU totaled six SOGs.

Jenni Aarniva finished with six saves.

Next up for the Tigers is the #1 seeded West Florida Lady Argonauts.

"We've played them already just recently," said Orr. "We know they are one of the best teams in the nation and we're under no illusions at the task we have. We'll go in as underdogs, but we're going to give it our best shot. We finished fourth in the regular season and now we're in to the final four, so we deserve to be there."

The match is set for Friday, Nov. 2 in Montgomery, Alabama at the Emory Folmar YMCA Soccer Complex. Game time has yet to be announced.
