Eckerd Spoils UWA Women’s Basketball Opener

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Chelsea Johnson scored 23 points to lead three Tritons scorers in double figures as Eckerd College defeated West Alabama, 78-63, in the season opener for both women's basketball teams in the Bahama House Regional Crossover Saturday at the ICI Center.
 
The Tritons jumped out to a 25-10 lead after the first quarter and led 44-27 at halftime. West Alabama rallied to outscore Eckerd in the final 20 minutes, but it was too little, too late as the Tritons took advantage of 31 UWA turnovers to score 34 points.
 
Zoe Richards and Brooke Juday both scored 10 points for Eckerd, whose largest lead was 22 points with 6:32 left in the second quarter. Armi Anttila led the Tritons with five rebounds, while Abby Whiteye dished out four assists.
 
J'Nyiah Daniels scored 15 points to lead West Alabama, followed by Jala Williams with 10. Bria Dent led Tiger rebounders with six. West Alabama managed to pass out out just six assists.
 
Eckerd shot 48 percent from the floor (26-54). West Alabama answered with 38 percent (19-49). West Alabama controlled the boards, outrebounding the Tritons, 35-28 and managing to double up the Tritons in second-chance points (18-9).
 
West Alabama closes out play in the crossover against hosting Embry-Riddle at 11 a.m. CST. Eckerd will  play Clark-Atlanta.
