Tigers’ Rally Falls Short in Fifth Set to West Florida

PENSACOLA, Fla.– After falling down two sets, the West Alabama Tigers clawed back to force a fifth set but fell just short as the West Florida Argonauts claimed the match and the Gulf South Conference Volleyball Tournament Championship Sunday afternoon in the UWF Field House.

UWA falls to 22-9 on the season. The Argos improved to 25-7 and receives the conference automatic bid to the NCAA South Regional.

"Gosh I am so proud of this team. How could you not be? Down 0-2 tonight and fought back without a drop of fear," said Head coach Alexis Meeks. "This has been such a memorable season and we hope we still have a chance to keep fighting because this program still has so much to give. This was the type of game a championship should look like, so I have to give a huge congratulations and job well done to West Florida as well. I really don't have much else to say other than I am proud and honored to be a part of this. Thanks to the entire community of Livingston for the support. This program and place are truly special."

Jessica Akiona recorded her second double-double of the tournament with a match leading 22 kills and 14 digs. Madison Cooler also posted a double-double with 11 kills and 16 digs. Taylor Donato and Jaime Lancellot also finished with 11 kills each.

Kassie Till finished with 49 assists and 19 digs. Rebecca Johnson led the match 22 digs.

Akiona and Lancellot were named to the 2018 All-Tournament team for their efforts during the weekend.

Makila York led UWF with 17 kills and Jordyn Poppen finished with 13 kills.

West Alabama will have to wait until the NCAA Division II Women's Volleyball Selection Announcement Show at 9 p.m. to determine its postseason fate.

The show will be live streamed on NCAA.com.
