UWA Women to Host MC in GSC Home Opener

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama women's basketball team will play in the friendly confines of Pruitt Hall Gym for just the third time in eight games when Mississippi College visits Saturday at 2 p.m.

The meeting with the Lady Choctaws will be the home Gulf South Conference opener for UWA. The Tigers are off to a 2-5 start, with both wins coming at home. Mississippi College is 3-2, but lost its only road game at Miles College, 73-68, to open the season on Nov. 9.

The Tigers are coming off a gut-wrenching 81-80 overtime loss at Delta State on Thursday, leaving UWA 0-1 in league play. MC is also winless in GSC play, losing at 76-64 at home to Montevallo Thursday.

Saturday's game will be the 25^th meeting in the series. The Tigers and Lady Choctaws have both won 12 of the previous 24. West Alabama won the last meeting, 72-58, at Pruitt Hall Gym on Feb. 10 of last season. Chloe Culpepper had a double-double for UWA in that game with 16 points and 11 rebounds.

Culpepper leads the Tigers in scoring this season, averaging 10.1 points per game. She is the lone UWA player averaging double figures. Tazsa Garrett-Hammett leads UWA rebounders at 6.6 per game, followed by Culpepper at 5.6. Elaine Field leads the Tigers in assists at 2.6 per game.

Zariah Matthews and Lauran Sheriff lead MC scoring at 11.8 and 10.0 points per game, respectively. Sheriff leads Lady Choctaw rebounds with 6.8 per game and Zan Ratcliffe dishes out an average of 4.0 assists.
